Quercus rubra or more commonly known as the Red Oak is a tree found during the 1700s by the colonialists of America and was then introduced to the UK in 1724. The tree is known for its bright foliage which is also where it gets its name.

The Red Oak’s foliage starts off with a deep green foliage which carries on throughout the spring and summer months.  Come to autumn and the colour of this specimen becomes magnificent with the green starting to get a yellow tinge to it until it turns to a fully yellow colour. This will slowly turn red and then brown during Autumn before dropping its leaves during November to begin winter. This provides a beautiful colour show that is very different to most trees. Like many other oaks, small acorns can be found on the Red Oak which are egg shaped and around 2cm long. The rubra’s bark is very strong and also smooth which is similar to a beech tree and has a grey colour which fits well with the bright foliage.

Red Oak thrives on acidic soil that is very fertile and well-drained; although it will tolerate most soil types. It is best suited to parklands where it has room to develop due to its large crown which gives the tree an amazing look.
