About This Tree
Commonly known as the Umbrella Pine this well-known tree comes from the Mediterranean and is very popular for its seeds. This magnificent tree was brought to Britain around 2000 years ago and since become very popular around the UK to even win the Award of Garden Merit in 2002.
Stone Pine can be seen with a rounded head and can be seen growing to a height of 12-17m when mature. The bark of the Pinus pinea has a craggy texture which will easily flake off when touched. This magnificent pine also will grow cones containing seeds when mature, which can be roasted and is the main ingredient in Italian Pesto sauce. The needle like foliage of this tree is of a darker shade of green and much shorter compared of other specimens. This evergreen tree is a perfect choice to provide year-round interest in any garden and parkland.
P. pinea will thrive on most free-draining soils and will withstand costal conditions but not as a first line of defence.
