Nothofagus antarctica, commonly referred to as the Antarctic Beech, is a deciduous tree indigenous to the southern regions of Chile and Argentina. This tree is celebrated for its uniquely twisted and gnarled branches, which contribute to its ornamental appeal in landscape design. The leaves of the Antarctic Beech are small, ovate, and serrated, transforming into vibrant shades of yellow and orange during the autumn, enhancing its visual charm.

Typically, the Antarctic Beech can attain a mature height ranging from 10 to 25 meters, influenced by the surrounding environmental conditions. The tree's spread is quite significant, often extending between 8 to 15 meters in width. This expansive growth makes it an excellent choice for larger gardens and parks, where its full form and beauty can be truly appreciated.

The bark of the Antarctic Beech is smooth and grey, gradually developing more texture with age. Its contorted structure adds character and intrigue to any garden space. In terms of foliage, the leaves present a glossy green appearance during the spring and summer months, eventually transitioning to striking autumn colours. The tree produces small, inconspicuous flowers in the spring, which are followed by tiny, winged fruits.

This tree thrives in well-drained soils and can adapt to various soil types, including loam and clay. It prefers a location that offers full sun to partial shade. Although it is fairly tolerant of cold climates, it requires protection from harsh, drying winds. Ideally suited for temperate regions, the Antarctic Beech is often utilized in forestry and as a specimen tree in gardens due to its resilience and distinctive appearance.
