About This Tree
Carya illinoinensis, commonly known as the Pecan tree, is a deciduous member of the hickory family, celebrated for its delectable nuts and high-quality wood. Native to the southern United States and parts of Mexico, this tree can grow to an impressive height of 18 to 30 meters (60 to 100 feet) with a spread of 12 to 18 meters (40 to 60 feet), making it a substantial addition to any landscape. The Pecan tree produces oblong, smooth-shelled nuts that are prized for their rich, buttery flavour, often used in various culinary dishes, especially desserts. Its leaves are pinnately compound, consisting of 9 to 17 leaflets that turn a striking golden yellow in the fall, adding seasonal interest. The wood, known for its strength and durability, is frequently used in furniture making and flooring.
Pecan trees thrive in deep, well-drained soils with a slightly acidic to neutral pH, flourishing best in alluvial soils found along riverbanks, although they can adapt to a range of soil types with good drainage. They require full sun to produce optimal nut yields, needing at least six to eight hours of direct sunlight daily. While somewhat shade-tolerant, their growth and nut production are significantly reduced without adequate sunlight. Pecan trees require regular watering, particularly during dry spells and the critical nut-filling period in late summer. Being wind-pollinated, they benefit from cross-pollination, so planting more than one variety can enhance nut production.
