About This Tree
Abies lasiocarpa occurs over a vast north-south range in North America & Western Canada. It is a medium-sized evergreen conifer with a very narrow, conical crown. The bark on young trees is smooth and light grey/white and will become rough and scaly as the tree matures.
The tree is easily recognised by its flattened, short bluish-green needles which turn upwards on the branches. With cones that are reddish purple to nearly black when developing on branches but become brown and papery after maturity and often quickly disintegrate into piles of cone scales once the cones have fallen to the ground. Birds and squirrel’s among others enjoy the seeds.
Full Hardy, likes snowy conditions and can be found in different soil types, which may be wet or dry.
